I think bipolar is more common or standard, so RM would be more common than AM.Īgain, THE ABOVE IS JUST PERSONAL SPECULATION. You shouldn't expect anything better than what you get when FM'ing 2 complex wavetables in Serum.ĮDIT: Seems RM is AM when the modulator is not shifted to be positive, so I guess with a bipolar audio-rate LFO modulating amplitude (or stuff that changes amplitude like a filter) you would get RM, with unipolar you get AM. I think people may be overrating audio rate modulation, it will basically add higher frequencies, inharmonic with most modulation frequencies, much like FM. That's probably why people don't notice aliasing and how similar it is to PM/FM/AM, the changes stop way before any aliasing creeps in because most plugins simply don't allow higher rates of modulation over a certain threshold. Most plugins are not made to be modulated externally at audio rates, they will probably cap out at some lower frequency, maybe 60 Hz to match a common GUI refresh rate, the sound stops changing after a while when you rise the modulation frequency.

Those will sound surprisingly similar, much like PM is famously similar to FM.Īlso, probably creates aliasing? As most plugins probably don't have any anti-aliasing measure for external audio rate modulation. Most of the time audio rate modulation will sound like PM, FM or AM (and combination of those) depending on what you are modulating (time or phase, frequencies, or gain amplitude), maybe RM too.
